Things just keep looking worse and worse in the Carmen Ortiz/Stephen Heymann vendetta against Aaron Swartz. Now it’s come out that state prosecutors, who were originally looking into the case had no interest in pursuing felony charges or prison time… until Carmen Ortiz and her team showed up. Instead, state prosecutors had focused on the initial charges: “breaking and entering in the daytime” which they expected “would be continued without a finding, with Swartz duly admonished and then returned to civil society to continue his pioneering electronic work in a less legally questionable manner.” Instead, the report notes:

Tragedy intervened when Ortiz’s office took over the case to send “a message.”

Carmen Ortiz should be disbarred.

Be-Tee-Dubs, Ortiz is at it again. This time trying to take a business that has been run by the same family for almost 60 years and was built by the current owner’s father. All to send a “deterrent message” while COINCIDENTALLY netting a large cash windfall to the commonwealth and the DEA.

Ok, I actually might know the answer to this, if anyone cares. In short: Satan rebelled partly because he didn’t want to serve God but partly because he was all jealous of humans being God’s favorite and getting free will while angels (like him) had to just be cosmic yes men. So he rebels and gets cast out of heaven. Now, the real Biblical definition of Hell is the absence of God’s presence. Basically, hell is a place where God’s grace cannot reach a soul, so the soul is alone and empty and suffers.

Then we get to the stuff about Satan torturing souls. There is some divergences in the theology/mythology (depending on what you believe) about this part. The two biggest ideas (as I understand them, and I wouldn’t call myself an expert) are 1) Hell is a place where God is not, Satan is kinda the big Kahuna there because he is a super powerful angel and everyone else is either a human soul or a lesser rebellious angel (aka demon) and so he is the “leader” but he doesn’t inflict the suffering, lack of God’s grace does that. 2) Satan DOES torture souls but it’s because he still loves God and was just being super petulant and jealous when he rebelled. Therefore, he gets kinda pissed off when humans betray God because we have God’s favor and pretty much everything he wanted and then humans just throw it away by sinning. It’s like how you can insult your family but you’ll spider kick anyone else that does. Also, as mentioned, he’s totes jealous of humans for having free will and being God’s favorites so he wants us to suffer. He is like the Westboro Baptist Church of the afterlife: he hates anything he doesn’t understand, doesn’t like sharing, wants to be better than everyone else, and wants to punish those he feels haven’t suffered or sacrificed as much as he has.

I hope that explanation 1) makes sense, 2) isn’t COMPLETELY wrong in every way, 3) doesn’t offend anyone, and 4) doesn’t totally ruin the joke. I don’t want to be the nerd that comes to the cool kid table and breaks up the fun with learning. :/

This is the PCOS awareness ribbon. I have PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome and its something that will be stuck with me for the rest of my life (just like the tattoo). I was diagnosed a year ago with it and thought that this would be an appropriate tattoo. I got it done by Heather from Needle Wurks in Saratoga Springs, NY.

There’s a PCOS ribbon? Seriously? Listen, I have PCOS and it falls on the “sort of annoying” side of the chronic medical conditions spectrum. It’s not cancer. Hell, it’s not even like really bad allergies. It’s obnoxious, but I don’t know that it deserves a ribbon.

What’s really sad is, I’m a Christian and every time someone starts a story with, “Did you hear what such and such Christian organization/person did?” I cringe because I assume it’s dehumanizing, fucking stupid, and/or completely contrary to the teachings of Christ.

Just the other day the BF told me about something good a Christian group is doing for the world and I was thoroughly shocked. Then I was sad at how shocked I was.
